When it comes to choosing the best baby bassinets, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Make sure the bassinet is sturdy and well-made. You’ll be relying on it to keep your little one safe and sound.

Choose a bassinet that is comfortable for both you and your baby. After all, your baby will spend the majority of the time sleeping, usually around 16 hours. They are a great option for newborns, as they are small and cozy, and they allow babies to sleep in the same room as their parents.

Also, look for a bassinet that is stylish and fits in with your nursery’s décor. There are many different types of bassinets available on the market, so it can be difficult to decide which one is right for your family.

Why Do You Need a Bassinet?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that for at least the first six months of a child’s life and ideally throughout the first year, babies should sleep in the same room as their parents but not in the same bed.

A bassinet is a comfy and handy method to keep the baby in your room during these early months without taking up as much space as a normal crib. Although the best mini cribs in the market today can easily replace the need for a baby bassinet.

With all of that in mind, here are our top picks for the best baby bassinets.

1) 4moms MamaRoo Sleep Bassinet

Price: $499.99

The MamaRoo Sleep Bassinet is one of the best smart bassinets on the market today. It provides a flat and firm sleep surface for your baby, as per the AAP’s Safe Sleep Guidelines for newborns.

It features mesh sides, height adjustment, for optimal visibility & accessibility, five different rocking settings with variable speeds, and built-in white noise settings to soothe your baby to sleep.

This baby bassinet not only creates a secure sleep environment for your baby it also has a rocking timer that can be set for up to four hours. While this is more than enough time for your baby to fall asleep, the bassinet can easily be turned back in motion by your smartphone or the bassinet touch screen.

This bassinet has a clean look thanks to its white color profile, contemporary lines, and breathable mesh sides that keep it looking great and compact.

Other Features

  • Firm, flat sleep surface
  • Mesh sides for visibility and airflow
  • 5 unique motions: car ride, kangaroo, tree swing, rock a bye, and wave
  • 5 speeds
  • Timer to help establish a bedtime routine
  • 4 white noise options: fan, rain, ocean & shh
  • Bluetooth enabled, control all features via the 4moms app
  • Adjustable height
  • Water-resistant mattress and sheet included
  • Easy to assembly, no tools needed
  • 1-year warranty from the date of purchase covers repair or replacement
  • Recommended use from birth until child reaches maximum weight limit of 25 pounds or can push up on their hands or knees, whichever comes first.
  • Dimensions: With Leg extenders: 34″ L x 24″ W x 39″ H & Without Leg extenders: 34″ L x 24″ W x 34.5″ H

Try not to overuse the rocking feature, some experts believe that babies who get accustomed to being rocked to sleep may be harder to put down when you transition them into a crib.

Keep in mind that this baby bassinet is recommended for use from birth until the child reaches the maximum weight limit of 25 pounds, or can push up on their hands or knees, whichever comes first.

Some customers complain that the bassinet motors may become noisy after a while. Others said that the noise went away after a while or it is easily masked by level two of the white noise. If you have trouble with your MamaRoo bassinet contact customer service, it is very excellent.

2) Graco Sense2Snooze™ Bassinet with Cry Detection™ Technology

Price: $319.99

What is not to love about the Graco Sense2Snooze™ bassinet? Like most Graco products, it is well-built, stylish, and very safe for your baby. This bassinet has cry detection technology and two levels of vibration which can put to sleep even the fussiest baby.

This and the three white noise sound options are excellent features for parents who are trying to establish a bedtime routine with their baby. You will appreciate the airy mesh sides to keep your baby cool, comfortable, and always visible.

The controls have dimmable lighting, making it simple to change the settings at any time of day or night. The reversible canopy works great to block light during the day naps. In addition, the mattress cover is washable making it easier to keep it clean and fresh for your baby.

Other Features

  • Cry Detection™ Technology detects and automatically responds to baby’s cries to help soothe baby back to sleep
  • The head-to-toe, soothing motion is gradual and includes varying speeds to help the baby get back to sleep
  • 3 different motion speeds are included to provide the right pace to fit the baby’s preference
  • 2-speed vibration helps to further soothe and comfort baby
  • Choose from white noise, ten sleepy songs, or ten nature sounds to help soothe the baby to sleep

  • Built-in wheels for easy maneuverability in the home
  • Recommended weight from 5kg to 10kg
  • Dimensions: 26″ W x 41″ H x 19″ D

Make sure you keep the volume of the tune down or the music turned off when using the self-sensing and soothing option. Some babies may get scared and more irritated with loud tunes.

It can be tricky to move the bassinet around the room if you don’t have both of your hands available. It has no handle to pull and only the front legs have wheels so you will need to grab it by the base to pull it closer to the bed.

If your baby is an extremely light sleeper he/she may wake up with the loud click of the bassinet’s buttons.

3) Halo Bassinest Swivel Sleeper 3.0

Price: $219.99

The Halo bassinet is a must-have if you like to swivel your baby to sleep or use it as a bedside sleeper. It can swivel 360 deg allowing it to go over your bed. It is also very handy to be used as a co-sleeper beside your bed. It can be adjusted to fit different beds and the leg design allows you to position the bassinet right next to your bed.

The nice mesh sides allow visibility and airflow to keep your baby safe and comfortable. The mattress is comfortable and easily removable for machine washing. You can also lower the entire bassinet to get your baby in and out with ease.

In addition, the Halo bassinet is a 2-in-1 system. The BassiNest’s bed detached with the push of a button allowing you to move it around your home for safer napping or rest time. Very useful for parents who work from home or when you need to take a shower and no one else is home.

Other Features

  • Sleep next to your newborn safely; without bedsharing
  • Swivels to easily bring baby extra close
  • Easy lowering wall for quick access from bed – no bending
  • 2-in-1 system transforms from bedside sleeper to naptime nest
  • Breathable mesh walls for safety and visibility
  • Sturdy base adjusts to accommodate beds up to 30”
  • Fabric zips off for machine washing
  • Waterproof mattress and fitted sheet included
  • The weight limit is 20 lbs or up to 5 months. (Discontinue use when the baby shows signs of rolling over or pushing up on hands and knees)
  • Dimensions Base – 47”x 47”, Overall height: 36” min – 44.5” max, and Bed: 32.25” l x 23” w

The previous Halo bassinet has the reputation for being on the heavier side but this new model has a sleeker design with an updated base that’s over 30% lighter, but as sturdy as the original.

The Halo does not come with any storage pockets or compartments which can be very handy for baby essentials. Also, the legs can be a bit of a tripping hazard when you walk around or too close to the bassinet.

Keep in mind that this baby bassinet is only recommended for maximum20 lbs or up to 5 months. So your baby may be able to use it for a short time if your baby grows fast and/or is on the heavier side of the scale.

4) Maxi-Cosi Iora Bedside Bassinet

Price: $269.99

If you are looking for a baby bassinet that is modern, sophisticated and has a stylish design the Maxi-Cosi lora is the right one for you. It is a great fit for families that like to travel or visit their grandparents often. The Iora Bedside bassinet easily folds up and stores in its travel bag.

The extra-large storage basket located underneath the baby bassinet is very nice. It allows you to quickly change a diaper while never leaving your baby unattended. It is also very versatile. It has five different height positions and it also can be adjusted from side to side.

It is perfect for those nights when you are too tired to leave the bed to check on your crying baby. You can easily glide the bassinet closer to give comfort and care to your baby without leaving your cozy bed.

Other Features

  • Easy three slide positions for a customized fit
  • Comfortable and supportive mattress for safe sleep
  • Breathable mesh sides allow airflow and keep the baby visible at all times
  • Large storage basket to hold baby essentials
  • Five height positions to adjust to the right height
  • Compact fold for easy storage, travel bag included
  • Max weight recommended is 20 lbs
  • Dimensions: 40.55″ L x 22.44″ W x 7.28″ H

Be aware that the lora baby bassinet comes with a mattress and cover but Maxi Cosi does not sell spare sheets. Not having extra sheets for messy emergencies can be challenging mainly during the night hours. Maxi Cosi may be able to provide another mattress with a cover set but they do not offer just only a sheet/cover.

I would like to make a note about the fact that the wood-looking part of the lora bassinet is not wood, it’s actually metal.

The lora is bigger than other standard baby bassinets so it isn’t practical if you are very limited in space. It is definitely on the bulkier side of bassinets.

5) Chicco Close to You 3-in-1 Bassinet

Price: $299.99

With the Chicco Close to You bassinet, you will get more for your money. It can be used as a portable bassinet, a bedside sleeper, and/or a height-adjustable changing station that will work for babies up to 35 pounds.

As a parent, you want your baby to sleep as close as possible to you but in their own comfortable and safe space. This baby bassinet can help you with that. The quilted soft mattress, the vibrations, the swivel wheels, and the mesh sides provide a safe and comfortable environment for your baby to sleep in.

The Chicco Close to You can be wheeled from one room to another. The front wheels have a locking mechanism for safety precautions. When you are not using it, the bassinet can be quickly folded and stored away until you need it again.

Other Features

  • 3-in-1: Bedside sleeper and portable bassinet convert to a changing table for extended use up to 35 lbs.
  • Height adjustable to fit over beds and allow for standing when used as a changing table
  • Height adjustment: 24″- 33.5″ (measurement from floor to bottom of bassinet)
  • Vibration, music, and nightlight electronic module
  • Mesh side panels for visibility and ventilation
  • Height-adjustable sides for easy access during diaper changes
  • Machine-washable, zip-off fabrics
  • Reversible mattress is quilted for sleeping and waterproof for changing
  • Dual-function handle/brake to easily maneuver and lock in place
  • Swivel wheels for smooth gliding from room to room
  • Dimensions: 33.5″ L x 28″ W x 46″ H
  • The bassinet is designed for infants up to 20 lbs, or until the infant begins to push up on hands and knees, whichever comes first
  • The changing table mode is designed for children up to 35 lbs

The one thing I am disappointed about this bassinet is the feet design. Think about sleep deprivation at least for the first three months. Then you get up to breastfeed your baby and forget the bassinet’s long feet that stick out. If you are a mom who does not handle lack of sleep well, you will be tripping on those feet every time you go close by.

6) Bugaboo Stardust Pop-Up Playard

Price: $339.00

Having a good night-sleep is essential for your baby’s healthy development. The Bugaboo Stardust is what I like to call an all-in-one product. It is an ultra-comfortable play yard that can be also used as a baby bassinet at home or on the go.

This Playard is very easy to set up and take down. It takes less than 15 seconds to pop it open and you are ready to go. The sides are made of mesh so your baby can breathe easily and see-through. There is also a zip-up carrying case for easy transport. It works great for a day at the beach or a picnic at the park with your little one.

The Bugaboo Stardust was designed thinking about the safety and comfort of babies. The built-in mattress provides the comfort your baby needs for safe playtime and bedtime. I love that the mattress stays in it when the bassinet collapses.

Other Features

  • Includes a firm and comfortable mattress, with enough padding for your little one to sleep safely and comfortably
  • Zip-in bassinet insert for newborns
  • Quickly folds and unfolds
  • Travel bag
  • All-around mesh panels will ensure optimal airflow
  • Polyester
  • Clean with household soap and warm water, use no bleach; drip dry
  • Dimensions In use: 25″ L x 38.8″ W x 33.5″ H, Folded: 25.6″ L x 5.5″ W x 33.5″ H
  • 3-year limited manufacturer’s warranty
  • Capacity Newborn zip-in bed: 19.8 lbs, Play yard: 33 lbs
  • Age range: 0 to 24 months, recommended until your baby is up to 19.8 lbs and/or 35 inches long, or when your child starts to roll and sit upwards

If you are an outdoor lover and are planning to use the Bugaboo Stardust outdoors, keep in mind that the fabric may fade with sunlight exposure. Although, this will not affect the functionality or safety of the Playard in any way.

Make sure you position the built-in mattress in the right way or won’t be able to fold it. Also, while the mesh sides are very nice they are flexible so consider putting the playpen away from hard surfaces when your baby is playing inside. Avoid the baby hitting any hard object close to the playard due to the mesh sides stretching when the baby leans or falls on it.

7) Graco Pack ‘n Play® Travel Dome™ Playard

Price: $159.99

The Graco Playards is the best budget friendly bassinet and I can not recommend it enough. I used a previous model for both of my children and I have nothing to complain about. They are a must-have for any parents that have a baby nursery other than on the main floor of your home. It allows you to change a diaper, put your baby to nap, or play all in one, and it comes with a lift-out small bassinet as well.

If you are a parent who is looking for a well-built and practical bassinet, with no sounds or vibrations this is the one for you. It is also a great choice for parents on a budget. It comes with all the features you need in a portable Playard, and it’s very easy to set up and take down.

The wheels make it very easy to move the Graco Pack ‘n Play around the house. You can even take it with you when traveling. The travel bag is included, and it fits everything inside so you don’t have to worry about losing any of the parts.

Other Features

  • Travel Dome bassinet easily lifts out from playard to be used in any room of the house, keeping baby nearby
  • Lightweight Travel Dome bassinet folds easily for use at home or away
  • Full-size infant bassinet provides an easy-to-reach and easy-to-view spot for your baby to sleep
  • Removable diaper changer features wipe-clean fabrics to make cleanup quick and easy
  • Built-in storage organizer keeps wipes, diapers, and other changing essentials at your fingertips
  • Dimensions: 27″ W x 37″ H x 28.5″ L
  • Recommended Use Infant Bassinet: Infant up to 15 lbs Infant Bassinet: Infant up to 15 lbs. Changer: Infants up to 25 lbs.

It is a good idea to put a small baby receiving blanket over the changing pad. It will absorb most of your baby pee in case of an accident. Otherwise, the pee will stay on the waterproof surface and may run up toward your baby’s upper body, making a bigger mess.

How do I Choose a Good Bassinet?

If you are already looking into a good baby bassinet then you probably already notice that there are many options to choose from. They come in a variety of colors and styles but the safety features are non-negotiable.

Bassinets come with the same safety features as cribs, and any bassinets sold in the United States must meet stringent Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards to receive a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC).

Just like a crib, the mattress/pad of a baby bassinet must be firm and the mattress cover/sheet has a tight-fitting. Also, infants should never be placed to sleep in a bassinet with any extra toys, soft creatures, blankets, or bumper pads, and they should always sleep on their back.

In addition, the baby bassinet should be well built and sturdy with no sharp edges, pinch points, or small parts that could detach and become a choking hazard. The bassinet should also be the right size for your infant, not too big or too small so that they can move around freely and safely.

Beyond these essential safety features, there are a few extras that make some bassinets superior to other ones in the market, such as:

  • Lockable wheels allow the bassinet to be moved around
  • Small enough to easily fit in any baby nursery size
  • A design that allows you to position the bassinet right next to your bed and do not create tripping hazards
  • Storage space for baby essentials
  • Folding capabilities for easy storage and travel
  • Adjustable height
  • Smart Bassinet options

If you are unsure what bassinet is best for you and your baby consider asking your pediatrician. Don’t forget that what is good for one family might not be the best for another.

What is the Difference Between Bassinets, Mini Cribs, and Playards?

Bassinets, mini cribs, and Playards all provide a safe place for your baby to sleep or play but they each have different features that make them unique. A bassinet is a small bed designed for infants that usually rocks or sways. Some bassinets even come with a motor to help soothe your baby back to sleep. They are smaller than a mini crib or Playard and often have higher sides to keep your baby contained and safe.

A mini crib is a smaller version of a traditional crib. They are larger than bassinets but still take up less space than a full-size crib. A mini crib is a great option if you have limited space in your nursery or want to transition your baby to a crib sooner rather than later.

A Playard is a larger piece of equipment that usually comes with additional features such as a changing table, storage, and even a bassinet. They are larger than both bassinets and mini cribs and provide a safe space for your baby to sleep, play, and be entertained.

Baby bassinets have a shorter recommended use than mini cribs and Playards. So if you are on a tight budget a Playard may be the best fit for you. The best playards/playpens in the market today are good until your baby reaches 2 years of age.

Try not to overthink it, baby bassinets, mini cribs, and playards come in handy to keep your baby close, travel, and/or visit friends and grandparents often. It is important to always check the recommended use limit from the manufacturer, specifically for business because it is usually very low.

Consider stopping using the mini cribs or the playards if your baby is active enough that can get out or climb them, regardless of the product’s max height recommendation.

What are the Different Types of Bassinets?

There are four main types of bassinets: traditional, portable, travel, and smart.

  • Traditional Baby Bassinet: It is a free-standing bassinet that is often found at the side of parents’ beds. They are larger than portable or travel bassinets and usually come with features like storage baskets and rocking motions.
  • Portable Baby Bassinet: It is a smaller version of the traditional bassinet and can be moved from room to room. They are often more affordable than traditional bassinets and some come with features like vibration and music.
  • Travel Baby Bassinet: It is designed for, you guessed it, travel! They are small enough to fit in the car and usually come with a carrying case. Some travel bassinets even come with a built-in nightlight and lullaby player.
  • Smart Baby Bassinet: It is the newest type of bassinet on the market and comes with features like sleep tracking, white noise, and room temperature monitoring. They are perfect for tech-savvy parents who want to monitor their baby’s sleep from their phones.

Are you feeling more prepared now to make a decision? I used a bassinet with both of my children and I would do it all over again. They are very handy to have around to provide a comfortable and safe place for your baby to sleep. I love that they were easy to place in any room of my home so I could keep a close eye on my little one at all times.

If you are a new parent don’t even hesitate. Get a baby bassinet! You and your baby will love it! And if you are still undecided, that’s okay too. Just keep in mind the different types of bassinets and their features to help you make the best decision for your family.
